HLC Colour Compass Two distinct angles: compass bearings run clockwise from North at 0 or 360 degrees. HLC hue runs counterclockwise from East at H000 or H360. North is H090, West H180 and South H270. Lightness and chroma distinguish colours within a family. Naming does not modify any master RGB or HEX value.

At C = 0 there is no hue direction. The original neutral H000 reference is retained, not renamed as East Red.

Method, sector boundaries & data provenance

A proposed naming convention, not a new colour standard

The words Yellow, Green, Blue, Red and the intermediate names are directional mnemonics. They are not ink primaries, unique perceptual hues, or individual official names for every master row. “East Red” denotes the red–purple direction.

Orientation follows the agreed map: +a* points East, +b* points North. Hue begins at East and increases counterclockwise. This differs from navigation bearings, which begin at North. The ring geometry is schematic: changing C updates the samples, not the radius; L is controlled separately.

At a boundary the sector in the direction of increasing H is chosen. Angles wrap at 360°. At C = 0 the result is always Centre Neutral, regardless of the stored hue label.

Exact browsing, not colour matching

This interface browses existing rows and adds a naming overlay. It does not run an RGB-only nearest-reference search, a Lab route, Δλ selection, ICC conversion or production analysis. No existing reference identity is reselected from its display colour.

At chromatic H = 0°, the existing H360 row is used and its original H360 label is shown. Direct text searches require an existing stored label or row ID. Missing addresses never receive a made-up identity.

Read-only master data

13,283 original rows are embedded as a compact, read-only excerpt. Only fields needed for this compass are included. Directional names are generated separately from those data.

Bound workflow: ATLAS Clarus v3.4.0 (project-internally normative). This experimental naming layer does not amend that workflow.

Row IDs preserve the master’s original zero-based row index. RGB triplets and HEX values are copied from the same row as the displayed reference. No new RGB conversion, interpolation, gradient, filter or transparency is applied to the reference fills.

Digital values are not physical measurements

Stored 8-bit sRGB guarantees file values, not identical appearance on every display. Where the master’s srgb_out_of_gamut_before_clip flag is true, the readout says so. Stored, potentially clipped RGB is not proof that the full reference is reproducible on a screen or in print.

HLC Colour Atlas XL source credit: freieFarbe e.V. The supporting Colour Value Tables v1.0 identify sRGB (IEC 61966-2.1) and are published under CC-BY-ND 4.0. This compass is a separate interface using the supplied active master, not a modified official atlas table.
